Round 3 YCS 2015

Hi everyone, I’ve not had much time to update the blog this week so sorry for that.
Saturday was amazing, not only was it my birthday but, I went through to Alien Rock in Edinburgh with Mum, Dad and Scott for the 3rd and final round of the YCS 2015. It was once again a hard fought competition, with the setters putting up some seriously hard and tricky routes.
Boulder problem.

One of my routes.
I managed 1st place again with Hannah and Carla coming in 2nd and 3rd, this was also the final result for the Series well done to us all, this means that all 3 of us are now in the Scotland squad and will compete in the British final on the 25th April at Ratho.

Well done to everyone who competed.
Mum had a big cake and I hope everyone had a piece, It was a bit embarrassing when Scott the organiser got everyone to sing “Happy Birthday” at the prize giving….
On the way home we stopped for a game of bowling then after dropping the dog off at home we went out for a meal, a great end to a fantastic day.
On Sunday it was my party day, Mum had booked a local hall and a disco and most of friends from school came along, thanks to everyone for all the presents.
Can I thank everyone for their gifts for my birthday but also for supporting my climbing, without everyone’s encouragement I don’t think I could do it J.

100 Climb Challenge for Urban Uprising.

Saturday 7th March,  the big day has arrived, we were up with the sparrows, organised and at The Glasgow Climbing Centre just after 9am, this gave me plenty of time to get in a good warm up. My younger brother Scott helped me with this. With the centre not opening till 10am we had the place to ourselves.
Scott putting me through my paces.

Warming up on the wall.

Can't help trying difficult problems.

Time quickly flew in and my dad taped up my fingers, this is the first time I have climbed with my fingers taped and found it quite unusual to start with, I was really glad at the end of the day as my fingers are fine.
Taping up.

I was just about to climb when the Urban Uprising Team arrived, from Edinburgh; they kindly presented me with a cool vest with my name on it and the date of the challenge. I put it straight on and started my challenge of 100 climbs.

New Vest and Tape.

The plan for the day was to climb for 40 min in every hour and have an extended lunch break. I was really quite pleased when I was at 25 climbs just after 2 hours this meant I was on track as I expected to slow down as the day went on.
Chris taking over belaying.

I had a good rest and some energy food, then I was back on aiming to try and do as many
climbs before lunch. Over the next hour I managed to get up to 40. I then went for my lunch a tasty haggis lasagne from the Balcony Café.
After lunch I got my fingers re-taped and was straight back on and busted out some routes.
Getting into it now.

I kept trying to vary the routes making sure they were all graded 6A and over, this was at times difficult during the day as the centre was open and got quite busy at times with climbers and groups being taught.

Varying the routes.
Varying the routes.

I had a lot of support from family and friends who had turned up to cheer me on; this really helped me push on as they were all so encouraging and supportive.  I also had quite a team of volunteer belayers; Dad, Mum, Chris, Jamie, Blez and Ross.
My support team.

Around 3pm I was a little tired and I knew I still had a lot of routes to complete,  I then went on to trying to complete 5 or 10 routes at a time, Slowly but surely I was ticking off the climbs.  I was delighted when I got to 90 climbs and realised I had pushed on and at 4pm I only had 10 left to do.
Still fun coming down :)

I had a good 45 minute break, refueled and energised I decided to finish in style, I went on the big brown feature wall and crushed my last 10 climbs.  The very final climb, there was a great atmosphere as everyone in the GCC had stopped to watch me and encourage me on.
My audience.

Pep talk for final route.
I hadn’t taken one fall but was worried I would on my final route; however I managed to the top and was lowered to an amazing applause.

100......
It was a wonderful day and I later on found out I was named as Youth Ambassador for Urban Uprising.
The next day my mum was back at GCC for women’s day, I wanted to go but my mum said I needed a rest day.  My arms and hands are fine and I have a good day just out playing with Scott and my friend Lucie.  I have been on the wall in my room though….I can’t help it :)

Thanks again for all the support and donations it really does mean a lot, with all your help I have raised an amazing £1100 for the charity.

My Team....Thanks Guys :)

YCS round 2 Avertical, Dundee.

On Saturday morning I woke up tired, I had been at my cousins 21st party the night before and we hadn’t got home till after midnight. I had to get up quite early but we were out the door and on our way in less than an hour. Our big white van was very cold so I sat in a sleeping bag on our journey up to Avertical world in Dundee.

Listening to Scott giving the briefing.

When we got there I met up with the other contestants in my group. We went round all of our routes and boulders. The routes certainly looked a lot harder than the others in the previous round but maybe that was because I hadn’t been to this centre before. We were all soon starting our warm-up, this was taken by Rachel Carr and after this we got into our group. We then went to our first boulder, I was second in the queue and I managed to top it. It was really hard though and I nearly fell off while going for a sloper. It wasn’t quick but we were soon on our second boulder, which I also managed to top.

Full stretch.
We then went up the stairs to our first route; I think everybody managed to top that.
I soon found myself climbing up my second route it was a little bit more difficult but I persevered and managed to top that route. I was really pleased as only a few managed to top this. We then went over to our final route which looked very, very difficult. I was one of the last up to try this route. Every move was very hard it took a lot of effort to stay on, my mum said she could see the relief on my face when I managed to clip in the rope at the last clip.

This was hard!!!

The last boulder was a crazy traverse with every type off hold on it…but it was good fun but not one person managed this boulder.
We waited anxiously for the results and I was surprised to find that I had drawn with both Carla and Hannah. This led to us having a super final.  Carla was first to try the route, I was second out. I tried really hard and managed to get to the second last clip.  That put me in first place. I was so pleased.

First Place.......

I am looking forward to the next round at Alien Rock which also happens to be my birthday.

Thanks for all your support.
